Open your Terminal<\/h2>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>Find your computer&#8217;s <strong>Applications<\/strong> folder and look inside it to find your <strong>Utilities<\/strong> folder. What is the Terminal?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>The exciting empty box you see when you open up the <strong>Terminal<\/strong> (also called the <strong>command line<\/strong> or the <strong>shell<\/strong>) is your direct line into your computer&#8217;s operating system. You can use it to navigate around folders, manipulate files, mess with the guts of your system preferences, and basically just do all kinds of fun stuff inside your computer. The biggest difference between the command line and other programs on your computer is that you don&#8217;t point, click, and drag your mouse; you enter commands as text.<\/p>\n<p>The last line of text you see in your terminal should be a username followed by a dollar sign ($). That&#8217;s called the <strong>command prompt<\/strong>. Talk to your computer<\/h2>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>Your terminal speaks in a language called <strong>Unix<\/strong> or <strong>shell script<\/strong>. When you use Unix, you can do a lot of the things you&#8217;d normally do by clicking and dragging, but a lot more slowly and labor-intensively. Just kidding, sometimes it&#8217;s slower and more labor-intensive, but sometimes it&#8217;s faster; it just depends on what you&#8217;re doing.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing we need to do is figure out where we are. When you open your terminal, you&#8217;re dropped somewhere in your computer&#8217;s file system (usually the user&#8217;s home directory, designated by your username). To figure out where you are type:<br \/>\n<code>pwd<\/code><\/p>\n<p>and press <strong>return<\/strong>. <strong>pwd<\/strong> stands for <strong>print working directory<\/strong>, i.e.,<strong> &#8220;Tell me where I am.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/11\/talk-to-your-computer.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2192\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/11\/talk-to-your-computer.png\" alt=\"talk-to-your-computer\" width=\"532\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/11\/talk-to-your-computer.png 532w, http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/11\/talk-to-your-computer-300x117.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 532px) 85vw, 532px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"clarify-step-10\" class=\"clarify-step-container\">\n<h2 class=\"clarify-step-title\">4. Reading a path<\/h2>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>Your computer returned some text showing you your location. <span style=\"color: #262626;\">If you think about your files on your computer, they form a sort of upside-down tree: the <\/span><span style=\"color: #262626;\"><strong>root<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #262626;\"> is your home folder, and the branches extend all the way through multiple folders into all the individual documents you have on your computer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #262626;\">The path your computer shows you works kind of like a URL: It starts at the root and then moves into subsequent folders. The name of each subsequent folder is preceded by a backslash (\/). So in the path here, I&#8217;m inside a folder called <\/span><span style=\"color: #262626;\"><strong>miriamposner<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #262626;\">, which is inside a folder called <\/span><span style=\"color: #262626;\"><strong>Users<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #262626;\">, which is inside the main, root folder on my computer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/11\/reading-a-path.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2193\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/11\/reading-a-path.png\" alt=\"reading-a-path\" width=\"587\" height=\"567\" srcset=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/11\/reading-a-path.png 587w, http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/11\/reading-a-path-300x290.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 587px) 85vw, 587px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"clarify-step-11\" class=\"clarify-step-container\">\n<h2 class=\"clarify-step-title\">5. Figure out what&#8217;s inside the folder you&#8217;re in<\/h2>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>Type<\/p>\n<p><code>ls<\/code><\/p>\n<p>and press return to see what&#8217;s inside your current folder. <code>ls<\/code> means &#8220;list what&#8217;s inside this folder.&#8221; (Ugh, I need to clean up this folder! Move to your Desktop<\/h2>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>Let&#8217;s move into the <strong>Desktop<\/strong> folder, since that makes things easy to find. Type<\/p>\n<p><code>cd Desktop<\/code><\/p>\n<p>and press <strong>return<\/strong>. <span style=\"color: #262626;\">(Tip: If you type the first few letters of the folder, followed by the tab key, the command prompt can auto-complete the name of the folder.) <strong>cd<\/strong> means <\/span><span style=\"color: #262626;\"><strong>change directory<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #262626;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #262626;\">By the way, if you ever need to move up the tree, you can do that by typing <\/span><\/p>\n<p><code>cd ..<\/code><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #262626;\">and pressing <\/span><span style=\"color: #262626;\"><strong>return<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #262626;\">. <code>cd ..<\/code> means <strong>move up one level<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"clarify-step-image-container\"><a href=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/11\/move-to-your-desktop.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2195\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/11\/move-to-your-desktop.png\" alt=\"move-to-your-desktop\" width=\"324\" height=\"50\" srcset=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/11\/move-to-your-desktop.png 324w, http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2016\/11\/move-to-your-desktop-300x46.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 324px) 85vw, 324px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clarify-clear\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"rule\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"clarify-step-13\" class=\"clarify-step-container\">\n<h2 class=\"clarify-step-title\">7. Make a text file with MAGIC!<\/h2>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>Now that you&#8217;re at your Desktop, let&#8217;s make a text file. Type<\/p>\n<p><code>touch hello.txt<\/code><\/p>\n<p>and press <strong>return<\/strong>. <code>touch<\/code> means create an empty file. Look on your Desktop. You should have a file there called hello.txt!<\/p>\n<p>Go ahead and double-click on that new file and type something in it. Create a new file on your Desktop<\/h2>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>Using the same technique that you used in Step 7, create a new file on your Desktop called goodbye.txt. Join those two files together, why not?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>Let&#8217;s combine those two files! Type<\/p>\n<p><code>cat *.txt &gt; hellogoodbye.txt<\/code><\/p>\n<p>This time we&#8217;re using <code>cat<\/code> for its intended purpose, <strong>concatenating<\/strong> (or smooshing together) files. In <code>*.txt<\/code>, the asterisk (*) acts as a <strong>wildcard<\/strong>, meaning any characters are allowable, as long as they&#8217;re followed by <strong>.txt<\/strong>. OK, that was fun<\/h2>\n<div class=\"clarify-step-instructions\">\n<p>Working in the terminal is fun once you get the hang of it, and it&#8217;s really useful for things like combining files, moving things around, and converting file formats. Some weirdos even <a href=\"https:\/\/computers.tutsplus.com\/tutorials\/how-to-tweet-from-terminal-on-a-mac--cms-24177\" target=\"_blank\">tweet from their terminals<\/a>, but that&#8217;s pretty extreme.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.tufts.edu\/cbi\/files\/2013\/01\/linux_cheat_sheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Here&#8217;s<\/a> a Unix cheat sheet. Using the cheat sheet, see if you can figure out how to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>delete <strong>hello.txt<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>rename <strong>hellogoodbye.txt<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>create a new folder on your Desktop<\/li>\n<li>move (the file formerly known as) <strong>hellogoodbye.txt<\/strong> into that new folder<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you&#8217;re intrigued by all of this, maybe you want to know more.
